Your Bowel Movements as a sign of health

I just finished speaking to someone about their Bowel Movements. This is ordinary in my work as well as speaking about many other intimate and unsightly discussed things. there seems to be a lot of controversy out there or lack of comprehension.

Should your BM float or sink?
I am not going to take the time to post links to all the contrived ideas but if you were to search you will find them and that there is no consensus of what anything should be. This is health in today’s modern world. Some say it should sink. Other say it should float. To many, this is a totally new concept to even be thinking about what your BM’s should do or even notice.

In the modern world, we do not really understand health at much depth. A normal healthy person is said to have 3 bowel movements a day to 3 bowel movements per week. This states a lot on that lack of knowledge in Western science. Here is the depth to our modern knowledge.

Health is not just that you feel good. That’s nonsense and shows how someone can be feeling perfectly fine and then they are diagnosed with stage 4 cancer the next day (personal experience of this). Health is seen from many vantage points. Even if you eat well (whatever that is believed today at this moment and subject to change), it does not mean you are going to be healthy. First, there is a multitude of posts here on how to eat. It is not a simple thing. I could write volumes just on that. It is not even in its infancy of being understood at all in the Western world, yet even with that lack of knowledge and all the nonsense diets that are followed that come and go (like Paleo is now on its way out (debunked) and the next will be coming soon) humans still are living. Notice that no diet coming out in the West has any comprehension of looking at the stool as an indicator much of anything. Additionally, Western medicine’s comprehension can simply be seen with what is given to a patient to eat in hospitals. Anyone that has experienced this knows what I am talking about. Packaged jello and pudding is normal to be given to a patient right after surgery or whenever and is not even in the view of being questioned.

You can eat clean fresh food but yet how it is prepared and how it is combined as well as the seasonal effect is taken in all has an effect on its results.

The stool diagnosis will give the status of Agni (digestive fire), the symptoms of abnormal Doshas (body humour), the prognosis of diseases, and the presence of parasites.
With Ayurveda, the stool is diagnosed in several ways.
Firstly, there is a diagnosis by physical methods and then there is also an examination by dropping it in water. The dropping it in water is only to see if there is Ama (toxicity). Ama is an important cause for gastrointestinal disorders and also the cause of many systemic diseases. Bottom line, if stool sinks, it indicates the presence of Ama. If it floats, then Ama is absent in stool. There is controversy here with it meaning that there is fat in the stool if it floats and it is supposed to sink and all sorts of other ideas. If food is proper and the digestion is functioning properly then the bowel movement floats because it is processed well. It sinks when it is not because of it being heavy.
The physical examination is done by color, consistency, odour, quantity and frequency, and touch. There is also observations of froth and pain on elimination.
The colour of the BM:
Pitta is primarily responsible for the production of colours. Tridosha also affects the colour of the stool. Vitiation of doshas causes changes in a different colour.
The consistency of the BM:
In general, the consistency of a BM can be loosely translated to dosha as dense is mainly due to Kapha Dosha. Solid and dry is due to Vata Dosha. Watery and loose is due to the predominance of Pitta Dosha.
The odour of the BM:
The odour of the bm gives a diagnosis to the altered pathological state of the agni.
The quantity and frequency of the BM:
This gives a lot of information of the person and the condition
The touch of the BM:
The touch sense of the BM gives the diagnosis of Cold, Hot, Unctuous.
This is just a brief glimpse at diagnosis from Ayurveda and any abnormal characters are used to diagnose various types of diseases or pathological conditions.
