Example of Understanding Disease in Ayurveda

Shotha is swelling, edema, protuberance, raising of the skin, which is elevated compared to the normal level of skin.

The three texts below are the main texts of Ayurveda.

These are the different types of Shotha or edema as per Ayurveda. The concept to get from this is that there are various types all different from each other and each then needing their own proper treatments. To treat edema as one thing is incorrect and not Ayurveda. One size does not fit all. To treat one type incorrectly will increase the disease pushing it deeper or creating a new deeper disease from it that is now more difficult to treat. Also, this is a good explanation that disease is not just a dosha based diagnosis and treatment.
