Dantadhavana: Brushing of the teeth

BleachedTeeth

After elimination of urine and feces before bathing, a person should clean their teeth with the tastes of astringent, bitter and pungent

If you read the article: https://trueayurveda.wordpress.com/2012/04/18/t-happens-the-bodys-natural-cleansing-system-why-do-a-morning-regimen/
prior to reading this you will be miles ahead and understand what the statement above means.

To make it really simple…… sweet taste is anabolic. It means it grows tissue. You eat alot of sweets and you grow, right? Excess sweet rots teeth, we all understand that. What are the taste of the toothpastes in the market? Sweet. And in the far past when you were a kid what were they? The further back you go the more you find what works and the closer to today you come it is about selling a product so toothpastes are made sweet. This is a view of Ayurveda is one of the main reasons why we see such a huge frequency of gum disease in the West.

Bodaka kapha is the saliva, the mouth is one of the homes to kapha. The focus of the teeth and mouth treatments routinely, in Ayurveda, balance kapha unless there is a individuals problem to be treated. Pungent, Bitter, and Astringent do this and a lot more for the gums and teeth.

Action of tastes:

Sweet Most acceptable taste, strength, Gain weight, Good for Eyes, Throat, Hair, Immunity, Nourishes Senses, specifically promotes all tissues, Produces kaphaja disorders such as obesity, laxity, lassitude, heaviness, “abnormal growth in mouth and throat”
V- P- K+
Sour Digestion, heart, appetite, specifically will sensitize teeth
 V- P+ K+
Salty Digestion, moisture, – stiffness, V-, Clears subtle channels, specifically will create salivation in mouth, liquefies kapha, makes the inflamed part burst and teeth loosen and fall out.
V- P+ K+
Pungent Digestion, cleanses mouth, – moisture, opens channels, scraping, specifically cleanses mouth, alleviates swelling, kills organisms
V+ P- K-
Bitter Gives taste, digest toxins, cleanses tissues moisture sweat urine stool, worms and parasites, dries moisture and fat, easily digestible, Specifically provides firmness to skin and muscles, gives rise to non-sliminess and dryness in mouth V+P- K-
Astringent Cleanses blood, dries moisture and fat, Stops flow, wound healing, size, scraping, absorption, not easily digestible, specifically union promoting, compressing, healing, absorbing

In care of teeth cleaning:
Benefits: removes foul smell, tastelessness and taking out dirt brings relish immediately. The toothbrush: Use astringent, pungent, and bitter taste teeth cleaning twigs for brushing the teeth. A fresh twig is made into a toothbrush by chewing the end so as to create a frayed, fibrous brush free from splinters. Plants recommended for toothbrush: “karanja, karavira, arka, jati, kakubha, asana and similar plants” Charaka Samhita Su5#71-74

Regular kavala (oil swishing with sesame oil) gives strength in teeth – Charaka Samhita Su25#40

Kavala (with sesame oil) provides strength in jaws and voice, development of face, maximum taste and relish in food. One does not suffer from dryness of throat, cracking lips, tooth cavities, pain in teeth, over-sensitivity of teeth on taking sour taste; teeth become firm-rooted, able to chew even the hardest food items. Charaka Samhita Su5#78-80
See article on Oil Pulling

Of course there are all sorts of details in treatments beyond this.

Taste of the herb and its potency is used as to the season and as the need of the individuals balance/imbalance.

Season – Taste, Potency – Herb

Summer – Sweet, Cold- Madhuka

Spring – Pungent Bitter, Hot- Karanja

Spring, Autumn – Astringent Bitter, Cold –Khadira

Winter and Rainy – Pungent Bitter, Hot – Arka

Autumn – Astringent Pungent Cold – Vata

A blend of herbs that makes a great tooth powder is Haritaki, Bibitaki, Amalaki, (those three are what makes triphala churna) Bakula, Babbula, Khadira, Kutaja, Nimba Twak (neem bark), Saindhava Lavana (rocksalt), Karpoora, Peppermint. You can order these in bulk or most of them and mix them yourself.

For the rest of us, we can use an Ayurveda tooth powder like Vicco, Vedica, Red or Monkey Brand and others. Baba Ram Dev has is Danta Divya product but it has black salt in it which there is no reason for. Everything else on the product labeling is correct. Ayurmere and others that are claiming to be ayurvedic but are sweet are just more of the same old same old modern world to making a cool product to sell. Your best bet is to stay away from anything popular. (my experience is that you cannot trust what is actually in a package vs what is written on a label much less the quality of the herbs or how old they are). Also, it has come to my attention that there is alum in one of these which makes complete sense because alum is very astringent. Of course this makes some people afraid due to the fear of aluminum but just to remark, India uses mainly aluminum pots and pans to cook yet the incidence of alzheimer’s and dementia is low. Interesting.

The following tooth powder removes bleeding, itching, and pain:
Powder the following Tejohva, haritaki, ela, samanga, katuka, musta, patha, jyotismati, lodhra, daruharidra, kustha.
– Charaka Samhita Ci26#183

And here are three more recipes

• Powder of Pippli (Piper longum Linn.) or Dhataki Pushpa (flowers of Woodfordia frutiosa Kurz.) and Amalaki (Emblica officinals Gaertn) fruits with honey should be rubbed on gums, for easy dentation.

• Application of dry flesh (Mamsa) of certain birds like Batera (Pleasant) and Titir (Partidge) with honey helps the appearance of teeth and mouth appears with, teeth like lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn) with pollen.

• Use of Ghrita medicated with Vacha (Acorus calamus Linn.), Brihati (both Solanum indicum Linn. and Solanum surattense Burm.f.), Patha (Cissampelos pareira Linn.), Kutaki (Picrorhiza kurroa Royle ex Benth), Ativisa (Aconitum heterophylum Wall.), Motha (Cyperus rotundus Linn.) and drugs of Jivaniyagana (Nutrient decoctives)

Other diseases have their own treatment as well as what herbs to be using.

Uncutous smoking of herbs is also used for loose teeth.

Another toothpowder one can make theirself that is quite easy is taking triphala, get an iron pan and turn on the fan of the stove. Place some triphala in the pan after it reaches temperature and burn the triphala to ash. Collect this ash after it has cooled and use this for brushing your teeth.

In Ayurveda, the teeth are hereditary from your father much like the Western world states that the influential hair loss gene is carried on the X chromosome, which a male would only get from his mother, and which could have been passed on by her father.

In sitting with my teacher having casual conversation about life and Ayurveda, which we do a lot and of which I hold as some of the most blessed conversations and time I get to have in my life, he shared with me about how when he was a child they would take the charcoals from the kitchen after breakfast and crush them up with salt and use that as their tooth paste without a toothbrush. This was real india and village life back in the 70’s and early 80’s. This was followed by everyone he could think of back then before toothpaste was brought to India. He also shared with me that the health of peoples teeth were healthier back then than today. The groundwater level that is being consumed has something to do with that as well. Suffice to say, maybe what is thought of in the Western world as health, and that of tooth care should really be rethought. There is a Indian toothpowder brand called Monkey Brand that is a charcoal base with herbs that would be similar to what he mentioned.

More to state here is what is consumed is alot to do with the state of the teeth’s health. Back in my teacher’s time as a child in a village in India, there was no Westernized junk food. Everything was fresh and natural, including the sweets made of lots of sugar and ghee but the sugar is not the same as the processed sugar in the states. Which is why there were not health problems due to the amount of sugar consumed back then.

But wait……. there is alot more. The health of your teeth is more connected to the health of your bones and this brings up a serious indicator.

Signs of diminution of Asthi (bone)… falling of hairs, nails, beards and mustaches and teeth, fatigue and laxity of joints. – Charaka Samhita Su17#73

Meanwhile one who has excellence in medas (fat tissue) is seen to have excellence in teeth – Charaka Samhita Vi8#106 & 107

The teeth are predominantly Parthiva (earth element). – Charaka Samhita Sa7#16

The health of the bones show in the teeth as the teeth are a secondary tissue of the bones. Increase the bone health and increase the teeth health. They actually get whiter. The gums health is split between the bone health and the muscle tissue health. It can go either way or due to both.

When asthi dhatu (bone tissue) becomes deficient, a lower bone density t score, signs are hair density and hair loss which may be distributed throughout the scalp or in patches. The nails become thin and break easily. The teeth can be loose, become crooked and become stained more than usual.

Bone Density Test Results

1 and above Your bone density is considered normal.
Between -1 and -2.5 Your score is a sign of osteopenia, a condition in which bone density is below normal and may lead to osteoporosis.
-2.5 and below Your bone density indicates you likely have osteoporosis.

Asthi dhatu or bones are formed from the nutrients supplied by meda dhatu (fat) through asthi vaha srotas (subtle channel of bone). The nutrients in meda dhatu which is meant to nourish asthi dhatu are processed in asthi vaha srotas by dhatu agnis (digestive fire of the tissue). Dhatu agni (digestive fire of the tissue) and bhuta agni (digestive fire of the elements .. vayu, agni and prithvi ) bring about hardness and heaviness to these nutrients which form asthi or bone. Su. Sa. 15/5

Asthi dhatu’s (bone tissue) function is to support. This can understood in several ways. The bones serve to uphold all body tissues and give them kathinya (firmness) and a foundation. When it is sufficient, it gives confidence, stability, confidence, security, certainty and a good stamina. Asthi comes from the term “Stha” meaning to stand or “endure”. Su. Sa. 5/23-25

From this shloka you may see how the depletion of bone tissue also results in mental process of a person without all of these qualities.

Vata (air and ether elements) aggravation is initially going to be caused by either sangha (tissue blockage) or kshaya (tissue deficiency) and if not treated it will turn into to a vicious cycle of ever increasing vata and associated progressive bone tissue degeneration.

Diagnosis:
First off is their aama (toxic metabolic waste) in the system? Is the tongue coated deeply with this aama? Aamapachana (digestion of aama) is a prerequisite for any treatment of deeper tissues. Diet should be aama reducing to remove any accumulated toxic residues of improper digestion, and also agni increasing to ensure that no new ama is formed. Langhana (fasting) is done remove ama and increasing agni. This is also based upon the individual and is not as easy as following the very popular “kitchari cleanse” as there could be several things wrong with the digestion that those kitchari cleansing diets will create more of a problem with. The most effective way of cleansing the system and dealing with all of this, of course, is real panchakarma. (need a referral of a real place to do PK)

So in diagnosis….. when air or ether element has afflicted asthi dhatu the treatment is to increase the quantity of earth element in the diet. Earth is found in the largest amount in sweet and astringent tasting foods. Astringent is the better for bones. When water and earth has afflicted asthi dhatu, the treatment is to decrease the quantity of earth or water element depending upon what is going on and increase the quality of the air element. Generally increasing pungent and bitter tastes are best for increasing the qualities of air in the body. Also in general, the diet should be light. When fire and water has afflicted asthi dhatu, treatment is to decrease the quality of the fire element. Whole milk, wheat and other grains should be taken.

Is the water to high is the body and washing out the earth element or is the air element to high and has depleted (notice this is what all of the modern detoxing does to the body and what we will be seeing a lot of in the future!!!) Or maybe it is even more complicated and water and air are both increased in the system?????? Complicated huh?

In a Western world approach, the answer would be to eat foods that build bones and the newest thing might be to take probiotics and to eat yogurt but this is where it ends and this is also the problem. The yogurt is clogging to the channels (toxic if with fruit) and the probiotics will create a pitta imbalance if ya didn’t have one before. Most of the foods that would be building bones are heavy nourishing foods. This means that they are hard to digest so just looking on the web and coming up with foods that are good for bones and starting to eat them in excess compared to what you where previously is a great way to create new disease. The reason why the bones and then of course the teeth would be a problem in the first place could be numerous but most likely on the playing card of that the digestion is unable to digest those heavy foods for whatever of the many reasons it is and so dumping more of the heavy foods into the gut is actually going to lead to more problems of the same. The answer would be to first stop looking on the internet for symptom based solutions and learn deeper knowledge. There is far too much garbage on the internet to make sense of it all and is not a good place to learn proper knowledge. Second would be to build the digestion back strong which is not of this article but is found in others across this blog. What is going on with the digestion and the tissues is not something one can diagnose by them self.

What I can say in general is that one can simply lighten their diet. this will make the digestion function better. Eat at the proper times consistently when your digestive fire is strong, meaning you have an appetite. Eating several small meals or snacking is not a way to do anything but disturb your digestion. Eat twice or three times a day. Problem with this advice is that someone that has a bone density disorder can have it for a variety of reasons and by lightening the diet it can increase vata which will degrade the bone density even further. See, it is not all that easy and that is why you have people that are called doctors that have studied these things for a long period of time. Lol. Everything else is just blindly shooting at a target that you can’t see.

A nice way to build the bones would be to take arjun or even better make arjuna kshirapaka. But that of course would be dependent upon what is going on with the person. There is also a great ladoo recipe on this blog that has gum in it that is really good for bones.

I could easily go as far as to say very easily that doing meditation on grounding and focusing on your tailbone would be one of the necessary and easier ways to treat from multiple directions as the western lifestyle is a fast paced and embodiment and grounding is lacking highly in that lifestyle. There is also chi gung bone breathing that can be performed but in any case the earth element needs to be dealt with and stabilized.

So when your out there surfing the web, and reading those sites that state that this is good for this and that is good for that, trying to learn what to do for your health problems remember, they do not have your health in mind. It is normally connected to selling a product. You are an individual. Respect yourself as one. One needs to have a proper diagnosis by a competent well educated doctor to have proper treatment of the actual problem. Another thing, The above is how real Ayurveda works besides the bone density test which is just used to confirm diagnosis easily. So what does that state about all the nonsense out there. Most of it is just Ayurvedic herbs and foods being used in a Western nutrition and medical method.

    • In general it is fine for everyone. From what you say is going on, you should do oil pulling with coconut oil, it cures everything. Okay, just kidding.
I don’t do allopathy, it is ayurveda, so i do not advise for symptoms. A correct intake needs to be done to see what all is going on. Please do not ask questions like this. Please understand ayurveda as it is. It is not used symptomatically. Why are the gums bleeding? What is the root cause? Understand?
      The nails should be flexible.

    • I guess you were being serious when saying “in general it is fine for everyone”.. and the joke was just about the oil pulling?

    • The Triphala seems to lose all it’s astringent and bitter qualities when turned into black ash. However my teeth feel clean and smooth afterwards.

    • I went to the dentist. They said my mouth hygiene was bad and a lady thoroughly cleansed and polished my teeth to get rid of the plague and even a haze that was all over my teeth. She did the polishing with a weird lemon tasty powder, also available in minth taste “cause people like a nice taste” she said. Just give me tasteless powder please, I’m not here for candy, but for my teeth lol! A man I used to take for a “yogi” told me “you for sure don’t need to brush your teeth everyday”, and I followed his advice, what a joke. Hence the bad mouth hygiene. They (teeth hygienist lady and helper) taught me how to use tooth picks (never did that in my entire life). Also they noticed a black lining at the point where the gums meet the teeth; the triphala ash. They thought it might be too coarse. When the lady asked one of their people who knew “a lot about ayurveda” about it I was told triphala was good for the gums because of the vitamin C in it, but the person never heard of the ash. I was recommended to use coconut oil if I wanted to continue the “natural tooth paste” (don’t even need to ask what you think about that one 😉 ).

Meanwhile, a week or so later, I noticed my gums at one of my teeth pulled downwards and left open a little part of the root of my tooth. This could also be due to the fact that I started picking my teeth twice a day (with pain and bleeding involved) since the day I went to the dentist. I reduced it to once a day and I only put in the tooth pick as far as is comfortable now.

What do you think about the black lining? And could it be too coarse? Perhaps I got myself some bad triphala, who knows, I never used it before.

    • Hi Jesse,
      Quick reply.
I would have to check it out to know for sure but the black doesn’t sound good. it is possibly the root of the tooth.
Try warm salt water swish with a pinch of turmeric in it after brushing. Swish it through the teeth. Do this for a while, several minutes. See if this helps. If not check back and we will revisit it.
So to answer the question of the triphala being to coarse….. I can’t even go there. Its ash. They can say they who know “a lot about ayurveda” and at the same time be using coconut oil in Holland but triphala ash is gonna be too coarse?
Continue to use the triphala. its not gonna hurt you.

    • Thanks,

Not sure if any of these people were dentists. The one cleaning my mouth was a oral hygenist and the one who knew about ayurveda I haven’t seen myself.

I tried the swishing with warm saline water + pinch of turmeric (after allready having washing out the triphala bulk I used for brushing, obviously) a couple of times.. some of the black goes away,.. but several small particles stay behind. Some of which I can rub out with my finger with some effort. Some would take more effort and I’m not sure if it’s the same with my molars (can’t really see). My dentist took a photo a few weeks ago of my roots and said they were fine (just sharing what they concluded, not taking it as truth or anything).

As I said my mouth hygiene was bad. My dentist said so aswell as the oral hygienist (they’re part of the same clinic). The first times using a tooth pick my gums would bleed and hurt a lot. It’s getting better now. I just hope the part where the root is exposed (a few milimeters) will recover, aswell as there not being any problem in having some black particles here and there.

      Thanks

    • Yeah, it even sneaks underneath the gums. Though a very very little amounts. Just a few particles left after brushing my teeth in the morning, swishing, eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. But now I’m gonna add some again with the second brush of the day ;).

    • I imagine something like triphala churna only lasts for 6 months. Just like ground spices, right?

    • Uh oh. What if the ash got really really hot and it has a whitish tone to it here and there?

    • “A blend of herbs that makes a great tooth powder is Haritaki, Bibitaki, Amalaki, (those three are what makes triphala churna) Bakula, Babbula, Khadira, Kutaja, Nimba Twak (neem bark), Saindhava Lavana (rocksalt), Karpoora, Peppermint. You can order these in bulk or most of them and mix them yourself.”

I would like to try this in order to get to know different herbs and make all of this information more alive… as now much of all this still sounds so foreign and far away.

I Have many types of minth growing here, basically unused. Waterminth for example. Could I use them instead of pepperminth or would that ruin the recipe? Hmmm, I might just buy some of it to compare the different types. I read it is a hybrid between Waterminth and Mentha spicata. Anyway, in the future I’ll just grow the Pepperminth myself instead of playing around.

      Thanks.

    • Can easily grow it myself. But it will take some time before Ive grown enough to harvest. So… I ordered some organic pepperminth. When the mailman handed over the package I could allready smell the toothpaste-like fragrance coming out of the cardboard box. I mistakenly however bought cut up leaves instead of powder. When I sent it back in exchange for pepperminth churna from a different organic brand called Jacob Hooy, what I received barely had any fragrance even when opening the box and bag ánd putting my nose inside the bag. I tried tasting it. Só bland. The supposed expiry date was 11 months in the future. A joke. Will buy the other one again and make it into powder myself.

Other than pepperminth I have all herbs except bakula. Am I right in assuming that all the ingredients, amla, haritaki, karpoora, babool etc are used in equal amounts of weight (not volume)? I reckon that with the right knowledge you could maybe tweak the amounts of the herbs according to season, prakrti etc. but I wont bother with that ofcourse since I dont have that knowledge (and who does really..).

    • Thanks.

I received the peppermint leaves which I added to what I had allready “made” (or rather just the combining of the powders). I like this powder. Perhaps more than the ash, but they are só different. This one leaves my mouth clean, doesn’t require burning or processing if the herbs are bought in their churna form, and I need only a little bit of it because it is so potent due to its strong taste. Downside is that I’m having a lót of different herbs now and most of them come in 250 grams so I could proparbly make a couple of kilos of tooth powder, lol. I might have to give some of it away.

      Thanks for the recipe.

  1. What do you mean nails should be flexible? My nails are hard, alternate between transparent and white tips (white most of the time) and don’t break when I for example hit a wall with my nails. They improved since I started oiling my hand eczema with grapeseed (yes, I know, toxic and rancid and whatever). I read on nail care sites that they can’t be too hard (after nail hardeners) or else they’ll actually break more, not less, is that what you’re talking about? Mine aren’t too hard, I hope, they don’t break easily.

  2. Pingback: Records to Smile About - Buzz This Now

  3. Dear soul,

Thank you for these articles.. they put me back into a humble place. I just ordered a whole bunch of copper tongue scrapers.. after having read a passage of the Charaka Samhita. I bought it because I have sensitive teeth and caries aswell… thinking it might help. Would you say it’s better to return them without having any idea what my dosha and aggravations etc. are (other than having done a simple self-test and reading on forums… things I assume are to not be taken serious) or can I safely use such a thing and share with family and friends… it’s a simple process and I mean.. if such a thing can help.

Well, thank you, I’m ready to get slammed. Haha.

    Love,

    Jesse

    • Jesse, Thanks for your comment and time you gave to make the comment. No slamming here. just laughs.

But…. western ayurveda would have you get a tongue scraper out of a metal based upon your single dosha prakrti (sarcasm). I would ask how many tongues you have that you need a whole bunch of them. (more sarcasm pointing out our consumeristic culture) It is not going to help your caries and sensitive teeth as that is not what it does in real ayurveda but I am sure you can find on the internet where it says it does as well as cures gout or something (yes, even more sarcasm). Use it. give the rest away. It will clean the aama off the tongue as it is supposed to and nothing else. It is s start and only one of many things that should be followed. Firstly, the most important is to wake up before the sun rise. Do that and you will have more benefit than using all of the tongue scrapers combined. 😉

    • haha thank you. I bought one for myself. The rest was supposed for other people. I followed my own logic.. thinking that removing bacterias from my tongue would benefit my oral health and thus.. my teeth. I didn’t think it would solve the problem entirely.. just a little help.. a little push in the back. I read in the Charaka Samhita that it would get me rid of foul breath and help with respiration… and that it could be of gold, silver, copper and tin… though it was just a cherrypicked verse of the entire scripture. Thanks for the advice. It’s what I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time. I do wake up before sunrise.. right before it though. Guess I’ll be having to set my alarm. Sunrise is at 8 AM at the moment.. that means to be in the right timing I’d have to get up just before 6:30?

      Love,

      Jesse

    • Hey Jesse.
It will remove bacteria and help with oral health, no doubt. Just not as much as what it is made out to be. its kinda fun to read the stuff written out there. Makes you wonder where they get this stuff. I do do my best to take the BS magic out of this. Ayurveda is not some magical system that then poetic license for people to claim anything they want. It is a beautiful science that actually is very scientific. When deeply understood it does what can only be looked at as magical from a modern worldview but it is so far from ‘magic’ or “woo woo”. That stuff actually gives Ayurveda a bad name.
Check this out…. take a breath first to just be aware of your breath before hand. Grab a towel and pull on your tongue. Then check out your stomach. its stimulated huh? Take a breath. Notice the breath is better as well. Huh. Who woulda thought? it does exactly as the texts state. Provable. Not try to prove that it stimulates all the organs and all of the other things claimed by Western ayurveda practitioners.

      Another text states:
Tongue scrapers made of gold silver or copper should be used to cleanse the tongue. It should be a soft leaf-like structure one. Length should be 10 angula (how long is an angula? Study real Ayurveda to find out). The regular use removes oral waste, mukha virasata (bestows strength of the mouth), foul smell, washes away jiwha (tongue), danta (teeth), mukha malas (wastes of the mouth) and improves /promotes appetite (ruchi). It cleanses and lightens in the mouth/oral cavity.”
Sounds like something to be done in the AM huh? There is deeper understanding to all of this. Other commentaries go into depth on how it is done, what happens if it is overdone…. like it will cause lockjaw and stuff. Notice there is never any regulations and rules to all of the Ayurveda stuff put out in the masses like Oil Pulling…. just do it 20 minutes… right?!?! Not! There are lakshana (signs) for everything. Ways to do it and problems when it is done wrong.
I do not see anywhere in any text it saying it stimulates all sorts of organs. I don’t see it saying anywhere in any text even about the tongue map that has been created and made into Ayurveda. Interesting huh?

Generally, just keep it to getting up 1.5 hours before sunrise. Simple.

      Best to ya

  4. Your message got lost to me in the sarcasm: ” western ayurveda would have you get a tongue scraper out of a metal based upon your single dosha prakrti (sarcasm)”. You mean it is nonsense to choose one according to your dosha.. or they won’t say that.. because they don’t have that kind of knowledge or understing.. hence the sarcasm? I even read somewhere that a steel tonguescraper would be suitable for all doshas.. that for sure must be entirely made up I’d guess. I’ve got to admit I was one of the people falling for the coconut oil pulling story. That’s how I got to this blog. Thank you for spreading the truth.. and making clear westerners don’t know shit about eastern wisdom and shouldn’t pretend to either.

So a scraper in the form of a leaf hmm? For sure not what I ordered lol. I’ve known there’s immense debt in Yoga and the Vedas ever since I met a man who tried to live it.. and inspired me directly, ever since I’ve been trying to get deeper into it.. and yes.. also by looking on blogs on the internet. Kinda had the feeling there was much nonsense around, but I had to work with the tools available.. Have been reading, following and watching some Indian gurus, hoping they could provide some real answers, though still I feel like they’re “obliged” to play their “guru-role” and in that play lot of truth is lost. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev for example says Brama Muhurtam starts at 3.40.. but I’d guess that differs from place to place hmm? I live in the Netherlands where the difference between sunrise and sunset in winter and summer is húge. People like quick and easy answers (put the oil in your mouth for 20 minuts haha) so I fear guru’s play into that desire. I guess I’ll have to meditate and study myself then, you being a big change in this story. You really put me into place. Thanks. I tried the tongue-pulling. Can’t say I clearly noticed a difference. I’ll try again, will have to pay more subtle attention. Love and have a blessed Mahashivratri!

    • Jesse,
Thanks for the comment and conversation. The reason why…. the more people that comment and ask questions, the more value this blog is to others. I will do my best to clear things up.

Yes, first off don’t believe the hype. I myself have watched beautiful and incredible things happen with real Ayurveda while living in and Ayurvedic hospital studying with my teacher. Like massive failure by Western allopathy that have just been given up on after years of treatment, after just a month a incredible and what can only be taken as a miracle would happen. Its not miracles, its real ayurveda done properly and applied by someone that has the detailed wisdom. None of what I have witnessed and taken part in is possible by Western Ayurveda. I have proof of that as well. I have written elsewhere on the blog about my mother and her parkinson’s. When i went to the Ayurvedic Institute, she came there for what they call panchakarma. Today, I look back and i know better but back then i was all gung ho about Dr. Lad since i was a student. This is a naive and massive failure that we see constantly within our “pseudo spiritual” world due to the naivity of the students, the seekers or the devotees. How is one to know? Discernment is lacking because the knowledge to have that discernment is lacking first. One must have proper knowledge FIRST. ALL experience needs to be off the knowledge, not just based on one’s naive experience. This is also completely backwards in the ‘pseudo spiritual’ world today. Piecemeal education, workshops, etc…. while what we do not know maintains a vast amount due to the fact that all of the vidyas are not taught properly and we don’t even know there is a proper way that they are to be taught. It’s frightening because if you really get this, its ignorance spreading. (and this, if you really can drop into it, is very humbling because it really shows how very very little we understand and know and then as well… live). On top of all of this, you need a real teacher to unfold any of the knowledge of the ancient texts and you cannot just learn from reading it in a book. If you do you are only able to filter the information through your own box of what you know already and none of these wisdoms come from the modern paradigm. As another example, there is a guy who started one of the big popular ezines out there. He wrote his own take of the Bhagavad Gita. His take though is that you don’t need a Guru and that the Guru is inside. Hmmm. Nice new agey perspective that goes along with most of what is going on out there so it sells. Fact remains though that in the BG itself, didn’t Krishna manifest as Arjun’s Guru? Silly when you just sit back and look with intelligence.

Think about this…. First off, Charaka states that any single dosha does not live long due to the fact that it is basically a weakness. This statement has alot packed into it. Just sit and think about it for a while and it will come to you. I for one have never ran into a single person with a single dosha prakriti. Show me one. So, where did all of the single dosha checklist and diet to follow come from then which is the popular thing in the masses and market? There are several reasons for it, the biggest is that Ayurveda is vast and incredibly deep. It is not for the less intelligent.

If the tongue scraper is to be of a metal to go along with the selected single dosha, then would we not drink water from the same single dosha selected metal cup in the morning instead of the copper one that is sold and pushed out there in the market for excessive amounts of money? What products for sale are created by all of this….. and more so, when the culture is in such a fear place around health and lost, what kind of money is in that? Look at that coconut oil world as an example. Think about it. Was Ayurveda ever this? Did they have steel back in those ages to make the all dosha acceptable tongue scraper? The tongue scraper is not to be in the form of the leaf. that is not what the passage states. It is to be thin like a leaf. This is just a really good example of what happens. We need to understand the text and not just take everything as a dictum but rather understand how that dictum is used in the big picture.

I am just going to comment on modern yoga here as well because it also is in this delusion. Yoga is not asana and asana will not get you anywhere as it is only a small piece that is not even in many paths of Yoga. Add to that, with the way that it is being taken and made into all sorts of things all based in Western exercise and not anything to do with asana in reality, it is only more and more attachment to the body and material. It is the only part that is sellable to consumers as well for the material world. Why is it that none of the ancient texts stress any of what is being taken as yoga in the Western world? Doesn’t matter how close you might think any of it is to authentic, its the same result. Now i am not against someone getting exercise properly, not at all what i am saying. Lets just not be delusional here.
Kashmir Shaivism is pretty popular today in the West in the yoga world and said to be followed by lots of Western Yogis. Please show me any Kashmir Shaivism text that has asana like what is being taught in the classes by these teachers. Also, show me Kashmir Shaivism texts, that are not some small sect being taught as real Kashmir Shaivism, that are stating to be out in the world as an activist.

I can also give some words here since you mentioned a famous Billionaire God Man. Stay away from them. There is lots of darkness behind the veil. Do not seek any truth there as truly, your only going to get entangled in the weird world of it. The wisdom is only as pure as the vessel it is being transmitted from. We are so so so naive.
Brahmamuhurta. Wow, it starts at 3:40? really? Gotta reset my alarm. 😉 Look into any, ANY, real text and you will find this to be untrue. Geez, just look onto Wikipedia and you will find this to be untrue. Stay off youtube and away from all of this fake Guru to the masses world and start to study the real texts yourself. Sure, it is a challenging way to learn because of so many pitfalls such as translation of Sanskrit to English which is near impossible, or the lack of discernment that even a scholar is only a scholar and is not trained on the path of which he is translating a text on….. there is a vast array of these pots holes. good luck. And then there is big problems as well with wrong knowledge flowing out there in the masses like the example of Shiva smoking ganja. Show me this in any text. Its not. This then can also be correlated by knowledge of Ayurveda as all of these vidyas work from the same roots. Bhang is toxic. It is only used after purification in medicines in Ayurveda. In that purification it loses its qualities of making you high. Hmmm. So much to learn, all of us and everyone of us is on our own path experiencing our own karmas.

Next, I need to point out…. what is a Guru. Nothing today because we have taken a Sanskrit word and destroyed it with our superficial use of it. This alone can be studied thoroughly and a lot of wisdom will flow from it. We use everything with such irreverence due to our lack of knowledge.
Let go of the popular world and just be and be you. I guarantee it is easier and can also guarantee that your karma is going to fructify as it will no matter what you are doing or think you are doing. There is so much less to SELL in this, isn’t there? 😉

Again, thanks for the comment and the time you’ve taken to make it.

Blessings on your path Jesse. Blessed Shivaratri. Shiva jai ho! Jai Ho Bum Bhola!

Which also brings up another little ditty. If someone is not actually ‘Hindu’ (or rather Satya sanatana dharma) with proper initiations and everything in the living the life that goes along with this path then what are we doing? Would we just as easily call ourselves Jewish or Muslim and pretend because it became a pop culture phenonenum? Do we have the discernment to realize our own responsibilities?

  5. Thank you. It seems your speaking from a place of personal integrity.

I’m drinking from one of these copper cups, is there any problem in that? I can see the copper could influence my doshas in some way, but I’d guess glass could aswell in another way. If walking in the dark.. what is the difference between right and left? Might be an idea to consult a true ayurvedic doctor. I can’t afford it though. I will implement getting up early, eating organic, meditation and living closer to nature.

Thanks for your concern. I’ve been feeling pop culture has a lot of garbage to sell. I’m off allopatic medicine for years, quit my dentist-subscription. I will continue to filter out the nonsense.

Thanks for your blessings, May truth thrive. Love.

    • Hi Jesse,
I have edited out some parts to this comment to allow it on the blog here. Thanks for the comment.

Drinking from a copper cup is not going to effect you negatively. No worries. one thing to know is that you put the copper cup in a container of water and just let it sit there for a few days before using it.

yes, seeing a real ayurveda doctor is the best direction.

Not only the pop culture has alot of junk to sell, the internet has a lot of junk to sell. I would put it like this…. on social media, if someone makes a comment of being sick, how many people pop up with advise of doing this or that? Then ask yourself how many people actually have any authentic education to be giving any advise? We take for granted that all of this health stuff is actually not superficial. Although those people most likely have the best intentions, do they even give it any thought that their uneducated comments and advise actually are harming the person? No, they don’t think so. At all. This is only due to the amount of knowledge they have and from that is the basis of their conscience and responsibility as to what they put out into the world.

best of luck with the filtering.

  6. I am looking into the most natural/eko fillings I can find. Aside from the metal ones which you have advised to stay away from I can find glass -ionomer, -compomer and -carbomer. About the last one the dentist who developed it says the following:

“Glass Carbomer is a glass-based filling and sealing material that sets chemically, but is optimised for heat curing (only 60 seconds!) using an high energy LED (Halogen) lamp. Both have the same glasslike base as glass ionomer cement except that it has a much finer structure, as a result of which less matrix remains between the glass particles, so that the material is stronger (8). In addition, use of this so called nanotechnology greatly increases the reactive surface of the filling material, which in turn leads to a better reaction. Due to its very fine structure, Glass Carbomer has an extremely smooth surface and can be highly polished. But the material must therefore be mixed using a powerful mixer for a longer period of time in order to ensure that all the particles are fully wetted .

An organic carbon chain based additive, which is completely biocompatible, is also added to Glass Carbomer to provide the material with greater strength and increased transparency. This transparency optimises the material for the heat-based setting process, so the radiant heat is able to penetrate more deeply. It also improves the aesthetic aspect of the material and gives it a beautiful gloss (fig. 3). As a result of this additive, the material also becomes practically insoluble and therefore less sensitive to the influence of acids.

Fluorapatite is added to the Glass Carbomer Fillings and Sealants in order to accelerate the remineralization process. Fluorapatite is a more stable form of hydroxylapatite, which is normally found in mineralised tissues. Compared to conventional glass ionomer cement, these particles will accelerate the transformation into fluorapatite. This fluorapatite layer will not stop after 500 microns but will expand over the whole filling. This new layer down is the most solid and hard biological structure that can be formed inside the mouth and is practically impermeable to the process of decay. In the Glass Carbomer Sealants even more fluorapatite is added (50% vol.) to speed up the forming of this very hard structure more rapidly. The Sealant material has a more fluent consistency than the Filling material.”

There is a chiropractor called Jacob Brandsma who has a clinic called Ozontandzorg (interesting to see the word “tand” or “dental” seems to derive from Sanskrit word Danta) who says he can fill or heal cavities without drilling with a technique called HealOzon. Here is and excerpt of his website:

“”After enough HealOzone application, finished with some saline citric acid pH balancer formula drops a matrix shield Garrison FX175 was held in place with Garrison FX600 3D Fusion ring. A Glass Carbomer capsule colour A2 was mixed for 15s and tightly squeezed into the cavity with necessary craftmanship. No drilling! No etching. Self bonding. After light curing with GCP heat lamp for 5 times 30s and chemical hardening for another 5 minutes excess filling material was removed. However finishing and polishing was left to another date for proper bonding with biofusion to take place. A similar cavity on molar 3.6 was somewhat sensitive and after HealOzone application left to cure with a special rinse to have a filling placed in another month. This mouth rinse is composed of some keltic coarse sea salt and freshly rolled barley flakes added to tea, coffee, food and drinks to soak dentine and add mineralisation with amino group enzymes. This procedure saves the lady a conventional root canal treatment for sure. The prognosis is fair.”

This seems like a load of bull and has been debunked by a dentist with lots of information and links to studies etc. that sound legitiment to me. However
when I e-mailed this dentist to ask what he thought of glass carbomer he replied that it is obsolete and that he does in some cases use glass ionomer, but that is limited in it’s use, because of it’s not as well resistant against abrasion as other materials.

I have spent hours of researching and it actually starts to dawn to me that the best option would be to use composit materials.. weren’t it for the fact that it is, as far as I know, the most synthetic material out there.

    • 4 years ago my dentist found two cavities in one molar. I was naive and thought I could restore it with the oil-pulling fad. Then because of your blog and you, I found out it was BS. So as I described above…

“I am looking into the most natural/eko fillings I can find. Aside from the metal ones which you have advised to stay away from I can find glass -ionomer, -compomer and -carbomer.”

One dentist who seemed like a person to be trusted (because of his endeavor to debunk a scammer, also mentioned above) told me he doesn’t use glasscarbomer because in his opinion “this material is obsolete in dentistry. Glasionomeer I do use, but that too has a limited use, because of its limited wear resistance it is not the first choice for normal fillings.

I decided to ignore it and find a dentist who would apply the glasscarbomer and found a dentistry at which Raimond van Duinen worked (co-the inventor of the stuff) called “Tandartsenpraktijk Statenkwartier”. He has said on a forum in 2007:

“cavities have to be drilled less deep, because of the self-reparing ability of glass fillings. The bio-glass naturally contains Fluoride. The total release of fluoride is equal to brushing your teeth once with fluoride tooth paste, but what people tend to forget is that these fillings also take in fluoride from for example food or water. With this fluoride forms via normal mineralisationprocess with the help of saliva fluorapatite. Fluorapatite is a kind of super-enamel from which fluoride cannot escape, not even with a strong acid. When this process has taken place (2-3 years exactly the time in which a cavity develops) a very hard layer will have grown which in principle never has to be removed.

The downside is that it takes a long time before they’re hard and therefore they are damaged before they have hardened (compare with concrete).

Glasscarbomer has tried to bring a solution to this. Fuorapatite has been added to aid in the mineralisation process. With the help of a warm lamp the filling can be hardened in one minut enough to finish it off. The material doesn’t shrink and doesn’t contain harmfull chemicals.”

“Recently I have given a talk about glass fillings. Did you know that almost all composit fillings give off toxic producs and some are even mutagenic. If you google medline and then search on that website for “Dental composite toxic” or “dental adhesive toxic” you’ll be shocked. As a dentist, you shouldn’t be exchanging amalgam for products equally or more dangerous! Also look for an article of professor R. Noort of the universtiy of sheffield (UK). Wednesday I’m going to ask him to compare glasscarbomer with all (!) denistry fillings. I bet Glasscarbomer is the most biocompatibel. Kind regards, Dr. Raimond van Duinen”
      Source: https://www.amalgaam.be/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=89

      This is him https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Raimond_Van_Duinen

I decided to go there and another dentist at that clinic took x-rays (this was 2 years after my first dentist found 2 cavities). Oddly he couldn’t find the cavities, nor the dental hygienist, nor the trainee, while having excess to good photos. He did find another cavity in another molar. He also said I had to get rid of my wisdom tooth. It was at this clinic where there also was someone “who knew a lot about Ayurveda” whom the dental hygienist asked for her opinion when I said I learnt to use ash powder from Ayurveda. They thought the triphala ash “might be too course” because of the black-ash lines on my gums. Mentioned in this comment: https://trueayurveda.wordpress.com/2015/01/29/dantadhavana-brushing-of-the-teeth/#comment-3782

I thought my old dentist proparbly had lied to me. The day before my appointment to fill my cavity with Raimond van Duinen I dediced to cancel, because I just didn’t know who to trust anymore. Interestingly they would not fill it with glasscarbomer but with glass-ionomer (I don’t know why, but he would’ve explained it to me had I gone to the appointment, which I didn’t). Now, 2 years later I finally sent my photos to the dentist whom I trusted, mentioned earlier on in my comment. I sent all data and photos I had and got this answer:

“I do see cavities in 26 mesial and distal on the old, aswell as the new photos (in other words, my old dentist was right). However, what I also see is that there is actually not an observable difference between both photos. In other words, there is no real deterioriation visible.

The fact that the new dentist and dental hygienist don’t see them suprises me.”

Odd. Makes me wonder wether the fact that they are a little bit alternative is a coincidence or perhaps correlated to the fact that they are apparently incompetent? Maybe I could’ve/should’ve seen all this coming since someone who knew a lot about Ayurveda worked there [I didn’t know that on beforehand btw], and perhaps “cavities have to be drilled less deep, because of the self-reparing ability of glass fillings” sounds too good to be true. Won’t go back there, that’s for sure. Maybe just put in a regular old composite filling, or find another place where they use “glass”. Just to be clear. Raimon van Duinen himself has never looked at my photos nor have I had contact with through e-mail or face to face.

So annoying, nothing is ever easy.

I had a friend bring over some herbs from India to make the tooth powder described in the article. Unfortunately he got me kutki instead of kutaja. He told me he thought he remembered the seller saying something like “it is the same” or “it is almost the same/it is similar”. I didn’t notice it wasn’t kutaja and made a whole toothpowder batch with it before I noticed. Fortunately it is good against kapha, but proparbly not ideal as a tooth powder. Will make the new batch without. I’m happy with the powder though. Thanks.

    • Lol. So the man who was kind enough to look at my X-rays and does not want any compensation, sent me this as a reply to another one of my e-mails:

“For the time being I myself would, seeing the time gap between the two photo’s, keep an eye on them and only fill them when they visibly deterioriate.”

Meaning that 3 dentists all say something different about something as simple (I would think) as a cavity. 1 doesn’t see them at all, one wants to fill them, and one sees them, is suprised the other doesn’t see them, but doesn’t think its nessecary to fill them (yet). Maybe I’ll ask a fourth, lol.

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if the operation on my neck was nessecary at all. I was able to walk with it for days. It’s proparbly a ridiculous thought and there’s not even a way to know since they don’t have the MRI’s anymore. It’s hopefully just a product of pure paranoid speculation from a place of no knowledge about these things, but I can’t help but losing trust in medical authorities. I’m glad though that this is only about some small cavities and nothing serious. The dentist who wants to fill them has been treating my parents for years and my mother has not been diagnosed with a cavity (or any problem of the gums/teeth for that matter) for a long time, so maybe I’m being too hard on them.

I hope you don’t mind sharing these non-ayurvedic experiences/exchanges, but to me it shines a light on western medicine as a contrast to Ayurvedic medicine. The example you give on toothpaste for example…

“Excess sweet rots teeth, we all understand that. What are the taste of the toothpastes in the market? Sweet. And in the far past when you were a kid what were they? The further back you go the more you find what works and the closer to today you come it is about selling a product so toothpastes are made sweet. This is a view of Ayurveda is one of the main reasons why we see such a huge frequency of gum disease in the West.”

… is quite bizar and shows our (mis)understanding of rasa. We draw a clear distinction between sugar and sweet taste. And sure, liquorice is sweet and is ok to use for the teeth. It is even mentioned in this article as Madhuka if I am not mistaken…

“Season – Taste, Potency – Herb

      Summer – Sweet, Cold- Madhuka

Spring – Pungent Bitter, Hot- Karanja

Spring, Autumn – Astringent Bitter, Cold –Khadira

Winter and Rainy – Pungent Bitter, Hot – Arka

Autumn – Astringent Pungent Cold – Vata”

…but what if you use it in spring!? It is still sweet and thus anabolic. Not at all ideal in spring when kapha is high allready. My father has trouble with his teeth. When I make a fresh batch of tooth powder he can use it aswell. Obviously I don’t expect it to take away the root cause of his problem, but I reckon it’s still better than sweet tooth paste.

  7. Maybe a silly question, but I do wonder, with all the modern tooth brushes that we use every day. We wash them with water afterwards and then use them again later… and continue to do so for months. Is this hygienic? Just to be sure I wash my toothbrush under hot water to kill the germs. My toothbrush is made of bamboo and the bristles are composed of 62% Castor Bean Oil and 38% nylon. I used to use licorice root to brush my teeth aswell, back in the days where I would just take internet’s word for plants being medicinal and whatnot. I see the licorice (madhuka) mentioned in your article too for summer (which it is right now). Perhaps that would be more hygenic as those sticks only last a couple of brushings. I doubt if they can be used without proper knowledge about herbs though (a simple doubt that I have is that I’m often cold. Even though it is summer. So not sure if using a cooling herb is the way to go).

  8. What about gray stains on the teeth caused by these powders like burned triphala or plain charcoal? Over time my teeth certainly have become mind i say colorful.

    • Erik, it is the state of asthi dhatu for you. Not about the powders.
Do a bone density test at your docs and you’ll see.

    • I get that, however it is removable with lot of effort and with polishing at the dentist, so it’s stains/on the teeth and not in/part of the teeth (asthi dhatu). Hence my question.
