Doshas and the Sub Doshas

Get up early in am brahma muhurta (96 minutes before sunrise) to work with Vata – move bowels, increase akash
If you wake up late you add kapha to body. The later you sleep in the more kapha is accumulated.
Not good time for oil basti – kleda in the body is high from the srotas being closed all night and transfers to amashaya/stomach that early. Want to do basti with small amount of food in stomach. When agni is tikshna or when you are hungry is not the time for oil basti.
In winter, if its too cool you may not want to get up from the bed, but open your eyes and sit up so that kapha increase is stopped at that point. Ideally you get up, but this will help activate Vata. Get up, brush teeth, then clear bowels.
Don’t drink water – In absolute opposition to what is being said by Western Ayurveda, water should not be drank first thing in the AM. It does not do anything healthy in Ayurveda, in fact it does just the opposite. From the nightime the shrotas or channels are closed. A building of kapha happens during this time. In the AM there is excessive aap mahabhuta, water, in form of kleda. By drinking, you actually stop the processing of this excessive water out of the body. Not in any of the Ayurvedic texts does it state to drink water in the morning. It does not stimulate apana because it would first need to go thru stimulating prana, udana, and samana before getting to apana and that will take much to long. When we don’t actually read the texts and just copy blindly like a parrot what a teacher has told us, we can’t possibly know what Ayurveda is.
Drinking a glass of luke-warm water does not help flush out all toxins accumulated overnight in the body. That is a completely Western concept and is not applicable in Ayurveda. Proof of this is found in the chapter on Grahani in Charaka Samhita.
People have started consuming hot water with honey but that is bad for everyone. You never heat honey due to its poisonous nature, the heat brings that out. Anything that is hot combined with honey becomes toxic for body. Heated honey is toxic for body – clinical symptoms are not specific, but can form an unhealthy metabolite which becomes stagnant in the body. Honey has scraping warming action and can affect Pitta adversely.

SLIGHTLY Pitta aggravating – black pepper, black gram, ginger, mustard seeds, hing – all can increase pitta. At same time Ashwagandha has warming potency, but in no way is as much as even black pepper. Therefore always used to increase potency of all the dhatus especially shukra dhatu. Honey is slightly more potency for pitta than ashwagandha, but much less than black pepper. If person has herpes for example – Pitta aggravated condition, honey can have an affect on a person that has that. But a lot of Pitta prakruti people can eat honey every day. Haldi/turmeric has hot potency but always known as Anushna (lukewarm). For some people however, even haldi could be aggravating. This is why cannot have generalized treatment for everyone. This is one of the reasons why we need to study Prakruti and Ayurveda deeply.

Oil honey and ghee
Honey (raw) – Kapha jamon fruit honey formed from the pollen from jamon trees which are good to treat diabetes.
Ghee (cow) – Pitta
Oil (sesame) – Vata

If you have a Pitta condition which has dried you out a lot, you need more unctuousness – turmeric and coriander could both be helpful because warm but unctuous.
Honey is good for losing weight. If the honey is old, preserved for at least 6 months. If it is new, it is comparatively more Kapha increasing. Physical appearance even shows that. 2 tbl. Honey + 4 tbl water is good for losing weight. Room temperature water. Treatment found in texts.
Gradations of explanations written in texts – honey with water good for losing weight, but may not be sufficient to lose weight. Must have lifestyle modifications as well. Honey is good for kleda but best for anupan (with herbs). Better for kleda reduction for Pitta – ghee with black pepper. Black pepper actually removes whatever is stuck to srotas. Good for Sheeta Pitta – close disease to urticaria, a skin disease. When Kleda is stagnant in the body, formed in dhatus at the point of the malas – formed in every dhatu for smooth functioning of the dhatus, but then extra is released in form of urine. May help doshas to create certain conditions and diseases. We shouldn’t have excess amount of kleda in body. Proper exercise is the best to reduce kleda.

Exercise – Ghada – a big club/weapon.

Koshtha Vyayam – chest and abdominal – pranayam, asanas. Helps to release stagnancy around visceral organs and lungs.

Shakha Vyayam – extremities – weightlifting and running etc.

Ayurveda doesn’t say don’t do Shakha Vyayam. However there are specific limitations of this kind of body – understanding the strength of the body. Otherwise its considered exertion not exercise which then becomes depleting to the body. Too much – when you need to breathe by your mouth, you are exercising too hard. When you breathe by the nose, you get an understanding of the state of your body. To breathe through your mouth it cools you down and you don’t understand what is going on with your body. You will overexert yourself.

Have a proper strategy of how to build your strength. Slowly build up your stamina and endurance. If have to breathe by mouth after 10 minutes, slowly build up and begin to do more each day.

Dinacharya – The order is important because it works with the pranas and doshas.
Ideally, elimination first, but sometimes warm water first. Eliminate kapha then vata. But this is for an ideal healthy person, most likely you are not that – will change based on what a person’s immediate experience is.

How do i establish regularity of elimination? treat constipation carefully, THEN follow lifestyle of healthy person. Could eat black raisins for mild laxative action first thing in the morning. Ideally, don’t start rest of routine until you eliminate. Ghandava Haritaki – specific mixture of herbs with small amount of dry ginger, haritaki and castor oil. Very specific and helps a lot. Black raisins BEFORE you go to bed.

Quick Review of dosha and subtypes
Doshas – 3 doshas, Vata, Pitta, Kapha
Vata – 5 types of Vayu – Prana – intake and inhale, Udana – exhale, speech, Samana – digestive, Vyana – circulation, Apana – elimination
Apana – subtype of Vayu for pregnancy and all downward movement

Prana Vayu – has a specific role in taking things inside – all sense organs, we hear through our shrota indriya – prana conveys from indriya to manas to atma.

Samana Vayu – has a very specific role in digestion, always in relation to food. Helpful in digestion working with Pachak Pitta which is responsible for breaking down food, and Samana Vayu is at site of Koshtha/torso through colon. Role of Samana Vayu is to flare up agni – without air on fire, the fire goes out. When Samana Vayu is present, agni is always flared up. Other important role is when food comes into Pachak Pitta, Samana Vayu holds that food in that particular area so that it can be digested. IBD(IBS) has a specific symptom of undigested food being seen in stools – this is because Samana Vayu is not holding the food in the Koshtha. Related to absorption issues because without digestion never makes it to the absorption stage. Check it out here, what about juicing. The food is not masticated so therefore never gets bodaka kapha mixed into it and then as a liquid moves through the digestive tract with speed of a liquid, not actual food. Will cause disease in the end. Juicing is not Ayurvedic, ever.

Apana Vayu – role not just of evacuation or elimination. Also should hold things for correct periods of time. Holding function not just moving function. Fetus in womb for 9 months. If Apana Vayu is not in good functioning, may result in early elimination of fetus, or holding too long. Baby held too long – oil basti given, because not just for reducing Vata, but also helps Apana Vayu to be activated. Certain conditions like uterine conditions may be related to Apana Vayu – PCOD – polycystic ovarian disease. Apana Vayu is very responsible for this. Basti helpful for this. Menstruation, uterus, issues here should always trigger thought on Apana Vayu. UpaDhatu involved. Also involved in anything menstrual is Rasa Dhatu. Not just excess or too little amount of something. Hinga increases menstruation but only a symptomatic remedy – but we want deeper treatment. Look at Rasa Dhatu for more information to treat on a deeper level. Amenorrhea – is there something causing a drying action at the site of Rasa Dhatu.

Udana Vayu – spitting, belching, hiccups – anything coming out is udana vayu. Vomiting also – but can be coming from the koshtha and the samana vayu which is pushing the udana vayu. Associated with bodily strength because in order to lift something heavy, you hold the breath and use Udana. Associated with Bala/strength. Related to smrtti/memory – to retrieve what was put in.

Vyana Vayu – circulation of all interstitial fluids, blood, rakta and rasa. Always associated with manas because the manas is also located in the heart.

Prana – means life. So used ubiquitously, but not the same as Prana Vayu.

Pachaka, Rajaka, Sadhaka, Allochaka

Pachak Pitta – main function is digestion. Agni is contained within Pitta. Pitta is the container. When agni shows its appearance. Pitta is fire and water, but liquid in form (Aap or jala mahabhuta), Agni is fire – opposites in form. We feel hunger at a specific time – when Samana Vayu active. At noontime, agni will show its presence because driest hottest part of day and the sun being at its zenith, the highest point of knowledge and from there the sun is setting or getting weaker. Samana Vayu flares up Agni, reduces Aap part of Pitta and then agni is fired and you get hungry. When water is more in Pachak Pitta – amla pitta – heartburn, sour belching. Food not digested properly because excess amount of Aap Mahabhut. Tikshna agni is very strong in tejas. Ushna and Tikshna guna are increased and this can be sufficient to reduce water in Pitta and results in strange appetite with ability to digest instantly. But in certain conditions this reduces unctuousness all over the body including Kapha. Kapha Kshaya – reduction of Kapha to point of being unable to hold onto weight. Vitiated Pitta known as Basmak.

Rajak Pitta – Situated at the site of skin. When we apply oil or paste of herbs to skin and it has some good effects on body, its because the skin can properly digest it through the Rajaka Pitta. When it digests, Rajak Pitta moves into circulation and then properly used by body. Sunburn is affecting dhatu directly. This is the obvious reason to stay out of direct sun, it imbalances the dhatu.

Jatragni main digestive agni which nourishes the rest of the agnis, so if that is disturbed, will affect the other agnis of the body. Rheumatoid arthritis – apply oil and the joints, swelling and pain INCREASE because the Rajaka Pitta is not sufficient to digest what is on the skin. Aama increases and pain increases because the Aama has obstructed Vayu and that causes pain. If someone is about to have fever, applying oil the person will have a fever. Aam is generated from oil on fever and increases the fever. Never do abhyanga when having a fever.

Alochaka Pitta – related to eyes. Two types of alochaka pitta, one for good intellect – Buddhirvaisheshika, one good for good eyesight – Chakshurvaisheshika.

Sadhaka Pitta – located in the heart. Sadhakam rhudakham pittam. Specifically located at the heart. The S.A. Node. Initiation of heartbeat, pumping of the heart, responsible for controlling Vayu at the site of the heart. Tej + Aap. Heat can reduce Vayu. When Vayu is vitiated at heart, palpitations – Vata issue. (add this to what we spoke of earlier about exercise and the heat building in the system to the point of needing to breathe through the mouth and sweat) Sadhaka Pitta will help to keep under control. Avolambhak Kapha – kapha function that holds the heart in specific form. All of these are specifically involved in controlling heart function. When we say sadhaka pitta we are referring to the functional heart pitta. When out of balance, is vitiated pitta. We understand it is related to the heart and has certain physiological functions with the heart.
When Sadhak Pitta isn’t functioning properly, we only consider the overall PITTA is vitiated. Same with Vata prakopa conditions. We wouldn’t do specific kshaya of a specific sub-dosha, we rather bring the whole dosha into balance.

Khala – from ayurvedic anatomy – the inner lining of every srotas. Something which helps generate Pitta – when disturbed, disturbs Pitta.
If majja dhatu is disturbed, Pitta is disturbed. When longstanding Pitta condition is there may lead to heart conditions. But increase in Vata, leads to disturbed mind. Mind needs stability – if body has enough earth element to it, can help settle mind. Vata disturbed, can lead to instability, and even to heart palpitation. Jatamansi is pitta alleviating, parthiv in nature and can give stability to heart and mind. Can also act as a tranquilizer. Calms down your thoughts. Take ¼ tsp. before bedtime. Eat powder and mix with bodakakapha (saliva) to start immediately in the mouth. Don’t mix with water or ghee or anything, just eat directly. Water Buffalo milk increases tamas guna which can help with sleep as well. Anything that is heavy will increase prithvi and tamas.

Ranjaka Pitta – lives in liver, gives color to blood. Also color to face/skin. Colors rakta dhatu and converts to rasa dhatu

Bodaka Kapha – at site of mouth – more than just saliva – first point of digestion. Rasabhodana – gives you the taste. Preheats the oven. But actually digestion starts at the mind and then we want to eat something. Then we start salivating.

Kledaka Kapha – in amashay/stomach – when we eat food it goes into stomach and is in the process of digestions. Aama(in process of digestion) – yet to be digested. The bolus that gets formed gets mixed with Kledhaka Kapha so that it can mix with Pachak Pitta for full disintegration of food. Each part of food then can be mixed with Pachak Pitta. Kledhaka Kapha is MORE liquid than other kinds of kapha. If too much in stomach, there is nausea. Therefore drinking water can aggravate that condition. Eat something dry (like crackers).

Pakwashaya – digested food vessel
Slesheka Kapha – present at every joint – something which helps prevent Vata from increasing at the site of joints. More unctuous than other types of Kapha. Cracking of joints means too little Slesheka kapha. When pain is there, not just Kaphakshaya, also Vata prakopa and an organ becoming affected because of that. But only happens when there is a weak spot

Tarpaka Kapha – located in brain, function is to nourish the sense organs. Function is specifically related to sense organs/indriyas. Jnanendriya – located deep in brain, organ for it is the ears, nourishment for the sense organ is tarpaka kapha.

Avalambhaka Kapha – situated at site of heart. Function is to hold heart in proper form, shape and location.
