Waking Early in the AM – The #1 Healthiest Thing Everyone Can Do
It amazes me every day how much money people spend on BS products and dead supplements and the newest diet or health fad. The easiest ways to get health are not stuff you need to spend money on like a $40 bottle of coconut oil. C’mon, get real.
Simply waking earlier than the sunrise is the healthiest thing that you can do and it won’t cost you a cent. Actually, it will save you money due to the fact your lights will go out earlier in the evening and you won’t use so much electricity or contribute to the excess light pollution.
When the sun sets, it affects the brain lobes, consciousness. Darkness is a relief to give us a break. Before there was lightbulbs the only light was fire. The amount of light a oil lamp and candles put out was extremely dim compared to what we have today. You wonder why we are so unhealthy today? Can I start to count the ways and the reasons?
Your biorhythm is connected to waking up early. When one sleeps after 6 AM, srotas (channels) get blocked. Kapha increases in the body the longer you sleep in. This is the heaviness that you can’t shake off. (see my post 5h!t Happens for more details) This all reduces hunger as well as the lack of bowel movement does too. This increases the wastes and toxicity of your body. So much for doing a detox diet or juicing diet when everything else you do is actually making you toxic, huh? All of this also increases weight because after sunrise is kapha time. It increases prithivi and aap (earth and water) in the body.
The goal should be to wake up at 5 AM and meditate or do your “YOGA” practice. Funny thing is that this is the only time really to be DOING yoga. Without the knowledge of how to balance the nostrils and open sushumna, doing asana at any other time will only imbalance prana because at sunrise the nostrils balance naturally and sushuma opens too. But who am I to say anything against what is being taught out there to the masses by all the 200 hour certified teachers, they have got to know better right?
If you cannot wake up early because you think you are a night person, which is only that your biorythms have been so screwed up for such a long time, then you need to learn how to chop the time down slowly. Ayurveda never ever does anything in a fast manner. This only creates an imbalance of vata and messes with everything. Try setting your alarm 1/2 hour earlier for a week. Then the next week, another 1/2 hour earlier. Repeat this until you are waking up before the sun.
The proper time to wake will actually change through out the year as the sun rise does as well. Brahmamuhurta is actually the proper time to arise.

Coincidentally, staying up late is just as bad for you as sleeping in. I would say that is why the old adage goes ,
“Early to bed and early to rise makes and man healthy, wealthy and wise”
there is also another…
Late to rise and late to bed makes a male unhealthy but wealthy and dead.
Of course modern research proves anything it wants by it’s ridiculous view of what is scientific to them.
Without understanding what health is and having a holistic view to the variables that effect the research, all modern science research ends up falling apart.
In this article, “nearly” 1000 teenagers where tested to see if staying up late made any difference. I would have to ask, what is their diet like? What time of year was the research done, What was the weather like? What was their health like prior? Diseases? Lifestyle? Mental health? Were they living a modern day student life or were they actually student? What time were the other students in the test waking up? Time going to sleep? The list can go on and on. All of these have a huge effect of the outcome. None of which fall into the view of modern parameter for research.
To aid sleep:
Before going to bed:
Oil the soul of the feet and toes with warmed sesame oil
Sit quietly for atleast 20 minutes before going to bed (better to stop all actions that stimulate your mind by 8pm)
put a few drops of warm sesame oil on the crown of the head
Brahma Muhurtha- 3-6 AM depending upon the time of year

When one wakes up between 3-6, it protects ones quality of life.
Protection of your body: 3 areas are very important:
When there is any infection or conjestion, oil is contraindicated.
Sesame oil is considered a very hitkar substance in Ayurveda
When you wake up:
*start getting aware of your breath in lying condition
- Sit up in bed
- look at your fingers (abundance-lakshmi), palms (wisdom-saraswati), wrist (consciousness – Govinda)
- Check to see is both nostrils are open- whichever nostril is open, put that foot on the floor first- thank the divine mother
There is a sweet shloka that goes with this called Kara darshana:
कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मिः करमध्ये सरस्वति ।
करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम् ॥
Karaagre Vasate Lakssmih Karamadhye Sarasvati |
Karamuule Tu Govindah Prabhaate Karadarshanam ||
Meaning: On the tip of my fingers resides Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. In the middle of my hands is Saraswathi, the Goddess of knowledge and learning. In the palm of my hands sits Mother Gauri, the Goddess of protection. Visualizing in this manner, I take darshan of my hands every morning.
Before stepping on the floor, bow down to Earth respectfully. Try to see the Divine in all. If you can, chant the following mantra
Samudra-Vasane Devi Parvata-Stana-Mannddale |
Vissnnu-Patni Namastubhyam Paada-sparsham Kssama-Svame ||
O Goddess, who wears the ocean as her cloths
The mountains are whose breasts
O consort of Vishnu, I salute you
I beg for forgiveness for setting foot on your body!
