Food combining: antagonistic foods

In Ayurveda, understanding the details in how to combine foods to create wholesome digestion is at the forefront of the proper knowledge. Most of the Western Ayurvedic Cookbooks do not follow this knowledge combining foods of opposite virya, energy, hot or cold potency. Or other wrong combinations. Below is from the text. Some of the substances are in a different cultures language and some of the herbs are even extinct or lost in translation. It is not the list you want to understand but the how and why behind them. This takes a long time to understand and is not simple. But as the beauty in life is its complication, only those that do not respect life and beauty want things simple.
And yes, heating honey is toxic.

  1. “heating honey
taken by a person afflicted by heat
    leads to death”

Hot honey+lemon+ghee is given by some as a remedy for cold and cough. Is it because heating honey makes a very ‘hot’ drink and relieves some cold symptoms?

    • What is done out in the world has very little wisdom to it and definitely does not fit Ayurveda. In fact, lots of what you will find being taught as Ayurveda is not Ayurveda at all. Specially in the West. I have ample examples if you need.

Yes, honey is never heated, not even in tea.

  2. “Meat of domestic/ marshy/ aquatic animals honey, sesame, jaggery, milk black gram, daikon radish, lotus stalk, germinated grains (sprouted grains)
Causes deafness, blindness, tremors, coldness, indistinct voice, nasal voice or death”

Does this mean fish cannot be eaten with daikon radish? It is a popular combination in Goa, a costal region in India!

Also, is honey and milk a bad combination? It is often used as a topping on pancakes made with milk 😦

    • Fish should not be eaten with Daikon. You will find things being done all over India that is not Ayurvedic. The amount of people that actually know Ayurveda here is limited. Goa is not really India, would you agree?

Honey and milk is fine, just not heated. So hot pancakes, no honey.

  3. Hello Brad,

What do the following lines mean?

“Meat of domestic/ marshy/ aquatic animals honey, sesame, jaggery, milk black gram, daikon radish, lotus stalk, germinated grains (sprouted grains)
Causes deafness, blindness, tremors, coldness, indistinct voice, nasal voice or death”

Do you mean that we should not consume the above items together or in some combination of items? What about cooking all meat and veggies in sesame oil then? Is that okay? Thanks!

    • Namaskar.
      AD,
It is amazing what one word out of place can do to a whole sentence. It should read “Meat of domestic/ marshy/ aquatic animals with honey….

What about cooking all meat and veggies in sesame oil then? In tilatailum? it is not the best oil as it is heavy. All foods are changed throughout the seasons, oils to cook with as well. Ghee is a better oil for many reasons. Sunflower or whatever is locally grow is good as well.
