Brahmacharya in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika
In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika Swatmarma has prohibited the company of the opposite sex. Actually the concept of brahmacharya in yoga is an essential prerequisite. The appropriateness of such a statement cannot be doubted. The is obvious to those who have lived a life of true celibacy. Especially those who have taken a vow of life long celibacy are expected to avoid the company of the opposite sex at all times but for brahmacharya to be followed by a householder and for a householder who has taken a vow of yoga studies, the yoga treatise like Vashishtha Samhita have given statement to this and said “rutavratau bhadaresu”, regarding the company of ladies. On account of such a statement being available Brahmananda has given an approprite explanation on the prohibition of company of the opposite sex by saying the householder is permitted to have company of ones own wife.
